Put 1 Glass of Salt in a Car: Surprising Hack Every Driver Needs to Know

That moisture can contribute to:

  • Foggy windows
  • Damp carpets
  • Musty smells
  • Condensation
  • A generally clammy interior

Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it can attract and hold some moisture from its surroundings.

That’s the basic principle behind the trick.

But here’s the important part: ordinary table salt isn’t a powerful car dehumidifier.

So think of this as a small, low-cost experiment for mild moisture—not a replacement for proper ventilation, drying, or a dedicated moisture absorber.

Does a Glass of Salt Really Absorb Moisture?

Yes, salt can absorb moisture, but the effect depends heavily on the humidity and the type of salt.

Under sufficiently humid conditions, salt can take on moisture and eventually become damp or clump together.

However, a bowl of ordinary table salt sitting in a car isn’t going to pull huge amounts of water out of the air.

That’s why I wouldn’t call it a miracle car hack.

It’s better described as a simple moisture-absorbing trick that may provide some help in a mildly damp vehicle.

And honestly, that’s still pretty useful!

How to Try the Salt Hack

If you’d like to test it yourself, keep things simple.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 sturdy glass or small bowl
  • About 1 cup of ordinary salt
  • A stable, flat surface inside the car

Pour the salt into the container and place it somewhere it won’t tip over.

The floor of the vehicle is generally safer than the dashboard, especially if the car moves suddenly.

Leave It Overnight

Leave the container inside the parked car overnight.

The idea is that the salt can interact with moisture in the air while the vehicle is closed.

In the morning, check the salt.

If it has become noticeably damp or clumpy, moisture has been absorbed.

If it looks exactly the same, that doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. The interior may simply not have had enough humidity for the salt to absorb much moisture.
