Does Unplugging Appliances Save Electricity?

Appliances That Need Clocks, Timers, or Programmed Settings

Some ovens, programmable coffee makers, and other appliances may lose their clock or settings when disconnected.

If resetting them is inconvenient—or if they need power for a useful function—unplugging them may not be worth the small potential savings.

Always check the user manual if you’re unsure.

How Much Electricity Can You Actually Save?

This is where things get interesting!

The savings depend on how much power a device draws while idle. A device that uses almost no standby power won’t make much difference, even if you unplug it every day. A device with a larger continuous standby load can add up over time.

Here’s a simple example.

Imagine a device draws 5 watts of standby power continuously. Over one year, that works out to:

[
\frac{5 \times 24 \times 365}{1000}

= 43.8\text{ kWh}
]

That’s 43.8 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually for just one device.

If your electricity costs 2 currency units per kWh, that would be approximately 87.6 currency units per year. Your actual savings will depend on your local electricity tariff and the device’s measured standby consumption.

By contrast, a device drawing only 0.2 watts continuously would use about 1.75 kWh per year.

That’s why unplugging the biggest standby energy users is generally more effective than worrying about every charger in the house.

Household standby consumption varies, and published estimates differ by country, home, and the devices people own. Rather than assuming a fixed percentage of your bill can be saved, it’s better to focus on your own equipment. <Cite refs={[“turn854067search1″,”turn854067search9”]}/>

Is It Better to Unplug Appliances or Use a Power Strip?

Both approaches can work, but a switched power strip is often more convenient.

Unplugging Individual Appliances

This works well for devices you use occasionally, such as a spare-room printer, an unused charger, or a blender that doesn’t need to stay connected.

The downside? Reaching behind furniture and disconnecting lots of individual plugs can become tedious.
