They’re Following Food
If insects are concentrated close to the ground, several birds may gather in the same area.
You might see an entire flock swooping repeatedly over grass or fields.
This type of behavior can make it seem as though the birds have deliberately chosen a very low flight path.
They’re really just following the food.
They’re Moving as a Group
Flocks often travel together between feeding areas, nesting locations, water sources, and roosting sites.
Their altitude can change several times during a single journey.
A flock flying low doesn’t necessarily indicate anything unusual.
Do Birds Flying Low Mean Rain Is Coming?
This is probably the question most people want answered.
Not necessarily.
You’ve probably heard the old saying:
“Birds flying low means rain is coming.”
There is a little more to this idea than simple folklore, but it shouldn’t be treated as a reliable weather prediction.
Birds can respond to environmental changes. Weather can affect wind, temperature, atmospheric conditions, and the behavior of insects and other prey.
If insects move lower or become more difficult to find in certain conditions, insect-eating birds may also change where they hunt.
That can sometimes make low-flying birds appear connected to approaching rain.
But birds flying low alone cannot tell you that a storm or rainfall is definitely coming.
If you’re concerned about severe weather, official forecasts and weather warnings are much more reliable.
